Bay Area

One of the primary initiatives of the Bay Area PRP chapter will be to work with the City of Pinole on implementing its landmark Ordinance # 2023-100.

As of January 1, 2024 no restaurant operating inside the city limits will be permitted to serve single-use foodware for dine-in orders. From January 1, 2025, no restaurant will be permitted to serve single-use foodware on any orders.

Plastic Reduction Project has been engaged by the City to work with all 126 impacted restaurants on how, in most cases, switching to reuse will be a profitable move for them. PRP will assist restaurants in accessing City incentives for rapid implementation, help to see a full-cost accounting of single-use alongside the financial benefits of reuse, act as a sounding board, and cross-pollinating efforts across the client base. Consultations will be free to the public.

If you would like to volunteer to assist with efforts, by being a consultant (training and support materials provided), please also contact John at the same email address.

Outside the City of Pinole, our initiatives are:

1 Crowdsourcing

App-based data gathering that can be used to inform public policy and drive research. After hitting critical mass through volunteer efforts, the City is now noodling into the database.

2 Free Consultations

For restaurants throughout the Bay Area interested in profitable pathways to going green. We can help restaurants access financial support programs, see the hidden financial costs of single-use, and roll various line items into P&L of what full cost accounting implementation would look like.

Expanding on Our Initiatives

Outreach and Education Goals:

  • Create public demand for circular policies and solutions to replace disposable "make-take-waste" packaging.
  • Introduce food and drink container systems
  • Influence public opinion as to the benefits of reusables and how those benefits outweigh the convenience of disposables

Advocacy Goals:

  • Educate public officials on the benefits of policies that encourage reusables over disposables
  • Launch a Skip the Stuff public awareness campaign, encouraging individuals to speak up for less waste
  • Highlight to other municipalities how Bexley's (a suburb of Columbus') ban on disposable containers is working

Circular Economy Solutions Goals:

  • Encourage and facilitate the circular economy initiatives and business-based, closed-loop solutions that replace disposables with reusables
  • Reuse for Dine-In Pilot — we're currently at the engagement process with 8-10 restaurants and coffee shops with  a plan to launch by 3Q2023
  • Restaurant Blitz — App-based crowdsourcing for volunteers to perform sustainability audits on the go
  • BYO program — Encourage business owners to promote "Bring Your Own" policies for their establishments
